SINKING CITY by Matthew Volpe & Megan Fedorchuk
Sinking City is a collaborative piece by photographer/videographer, Matthew Volpe (he/him), and writer, Megan Fedorchuk (she/her). The original concept for this project was to showcase an ongoing body of work that acts as Volpe’s photographic journal. Documenting what he sees, the images are meant to capture fleeting moments that are candid, unique and temporary. The collection of images are, in a way, a metaphor for life, and the photographic practice an allegory for our fragile memory.
Sinking City, written by Fedorchuk, is a piece that was created specifically for this project. Inspired by the uncanny nature of Volpe’s photography, Fedorchuk draws from the unsettling effect of a bad dream, and how it can alienate us from our own consciousness. The addition of Sinking City suggests that readers re-examine their first impressions of each photo, now that they’ve been given context.

What People Are Saying
“Sinking City is one of those pieces of writing that will take on a unique meaning to each person who reads it. For some it may represent the literal dream state, and for others it may mirror a more figurative reflection on one’s life path. Everyone, though, will find a piece of themselves in Sinking City.”
— L.D., Saskatoon, SK
“The beautifully curated Sinking City by Matthew Volpe and Megan Fedorchuk pairs poetry with photographs. While some photos are uncanny, others seem commonplace upon first glance. However, when juxtaposed with unsettling images and poetry, these seemingly simple photos develop complex meanings. Further, the meditative writing lends a story-line that begs each reader to ask themselves, ‘have I been asleep my whole life?’”
— K.M., Austin, TX
“Sinking City by Matthew Volpe and Megan Fedorchuk is an apocalyptic daydream rooted in reality”
— L.B.K., Albert Bridge, NS
