THE HILL BY THE LAKE by Linnea Bargen-Koehn & Natahna Bargen-Lema

Linnea Bargen-Koehn (she/her) writes delicate and nostalgic children’s stories that feel like unearthing buried treasure. In The Hill By The Lake, Bargen-Koehn excavates her own personal memories of a perfect day spent at a hidden prairie lake as seen through the eyes of a child. With multimedia, collage-styled artwork by Bargen-Koehn’s own sister, Natahna Bargen-Lema (she/her), the two create a piece of eLiterature that is equal parts whimsical and intricately detailed. Let yourself, and the special little one in your life, get lost in this debut work and be transported to the imaginative playground of rural Saskatchewan together.

A Note From the Author

“My sister and I decided that all our proceeds from the sale of The Hill by the Lake would go to a non-profit called Reclaiming Our Roots: Land Based Learning for Urban Indigenous Youth.  They are relatively local to where I live and do empowering and life-sustaining work rooted in Mi’kmaw values. To learn more or become connected, follow them on Facebook or on Instagram. I am grateful to my friend Caroline for telling me about them and for the chance to tell all of you about them, as well.”

What People Are Saying

The Hill by the Lake is a whimsical trip down memory lane for anyone who grew up on the prairies. It is a wonderful bridge between the adults who are reading and the children who are listening; connecting our ‘grown up’ memories to the new experiences of children living the simple joys of country trips.”

— L.D., Saskatoon, SK

“An excellent read for adults and children alike. Creative illustrations complemented the imagery in the text perfectly. The best part was being taken back to some of my own childhood memories—memories to cherish forever!”

— N.M., Saskatoon, SK

The Hill by the Lake is such a perfect gem! The illustrations are so cool and fun, and the story is full of imagination and adventure! The sisters perfectly captured the feeling of being small and going on a big adventure; spotting insects, running through tall grass, imaging you could take off like a bird. I loved it and I think it would be a special book to share with anyone small in your life.”
