SINKING CITY by Matthew Volpe and Megan Fedorchuk
Sinking City is a collaborative piece completed by photographer/videographer, Matthew Volpe, and writer, Megan Fedorchuk. The original concept for this project was to showcase an ongoing body of work that acts as Volpe’s photographic journal. Documenting what he sees, the images are meant to capture fleeting moments that are candid, unique and temporary. The collection of images are, in a way, a metaphor for life, and the photographic practice an allegory for our fragile memory.
Sinking City, written by Fedorchuk, is a piece that was created specifically for this project. Inspired by the uncanny nature of Volpe’s photography, Fedorchuk draws from the unsettling effects of a bad dream, and how it can alienate us from our own consciousness. The addition of Sinking City suggests that readers re-examine their first impressions of each photo, now that they’ve been given context.
